Alcohol Rehab in Chicago

Updated

Alcohol rehab in Chicago covers outpatient and inpatient treatments, detoxification, behavioral therapies, and other options. There is no one-size-fits-all method to treat alcohol addiction because it impacts different people differently.

The first step to getting help for an alcohol use disorder is admitting that you have a problem and need help. That can be scary, especially if youre afraid of the stigma associated with addiction treatment or worried about what others may think. But its important to remember that youre not alone, and there are many resources available to support you on your journey to recovery.

People looking for alcohol rehab in Chicago should check into a residential or outpatient program that includes evidence-based therapies to treat AUD. These programs vary in length and intensity. For example, you might find a short-term detoxification option or a longer-term residential facility with a strong focus on relapse prevention skills.

Alcohol addiction is an ongoing process that starts with an initial drink but eventually spirals out of control. A person struggling with AUD might be able to stop drinking for short periods, but they will likely continue to struggle with alcohol in some form or another as time passes. Addiction is a chronic disease that requires long-term treatment and aftercare support.

Alcohol Treatment Options in Chicago

SAMHSA lists 32 programs in Chicago with a wide range of services and levels of care.

Chicago residents looking to get help for alcohol addiction can look at a number of options including inpatient/residential, intensive outpatient (IOP), and outpatient programs. Residential is the most highly structured level of care, involving around-the-clock supervision by medical staff, nurses, counselors, therapists, or doctors. In this setting patients receive treatment in one facility while not living in their normal environment. Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOPs) provide a more intensive program with multiple hours per week for clients in the community who do not require 24-hour care and support services of a residential treatment program. Outpatient programs include counseling and therapy sessions, but do not include 24-hour medical supervision.

The following are the types of substance use disorder treatment that can be found at SAMHSA-listed programs in Chicago:

All levels of care are often offered as part of a continuum of care. That is, patients can "step down" in intensity and frequency of care if they need less intensive services.

Detox and Withdrawal Care in Chicago

Treatment for alcohol withdrawal will depend on the severity of your symptoms.

People with moderate-to-severe alcohol withdrawal may be at risk for delirium tremens or seizures, so they should have medical supervision as part of the detox process. It's important that these individuals don't try to detox from alcohol on their own. This can lead to serious consequences.

People with moderate-to-severe alcohol withdrawal may require hospitalization or an inpatient rehab program that provides 24-hour monitoring.

If you need medical attention, your provider will determine the best course of treatment for you. In addition, many people with mild-to-moderate alcohol withdrawal symptoms can be treated as outpatients. During this process, someone will stay with you and keep a watchful eye on you.

Severe alcohol withdrawal symptoms include:

These symptoms can be dangerous, so people with severe alcohol withdrawal symptoms should seek medical treatment. A physician may prescribe medication to control the seizures and other severe symptoms associated with alcohol withdrawal.

Mild-to-moderate alcohol withdrawal symptoms include:

Outpatient and Intensive Outpatient Programs

The therapist will help the client understand the causes of their drinking problems. They will offer coping strategies, relapse prevention techniques, and other ways to reduce their triggers and urges to drink.

Therapy may include group meetings with other recovering people in similar circumstances.

Some outpatient treatments also provide counseling services that cover topics like relapse prevention, anger management, stress reduction, conflict resolution skills training, parenting skills development, and more.

There are two main types of outpatient services: regular outpatient and intensive outpatient.

The outpatient option allows you to live at home or in a sober living environment while receiving the necessary treatment.

Outpatient treatment provides a more flexible environment for clients than inpatient programs. You are able to continue your daily activities and responsibilities while receiving counseling and support services through an outpatient program. Outpatient care can be very effective as long as the client understands they will need to maintain their commitment to recovery on their own during times when they are not under treatment supervision.

Intensive outpatient programs are similar to outpatient programs, but they provide more hours of care per week.

Intensive outpatient programs (IOP) provide more intensive levels of care than traditional outpatient programs. IOPs can help you recover from addiction while continuing your normal daily activities, but require that you attend counseling sessions and support meetings for a longer period of time per week than standard outpatient services.

A good outpatient alcohol treatment program in Chicago should offer a combination of evidence-based therapies to meet your needs. Common types of behavioral therapies used to treat AUD include:

Residential Alcohol Treatment

Lawrence Hall lists residential care for children while Montrose Behavioral Health includes adults.

Montrose Behavioral Health has a 24-hour hospital program for adults, another one for teens. They also have an outpatient branch that serves young adults, adults, and seniors. The hospital has mental health care with dual diagnosis treatment included.

SunCloud Health SC lists outpatient and partial hospitalization services.

Residential alcohol treatment places people in a secure environment while they work on their substance use disorder and mental health issues. Residential rehab programs offer an intensive level of care and therapy to help each person build skills that will help them overcome substance abuse problems.

Public and Low-Cost Options in Chicago and Cook County

Cook County residents can reach substance use care through CCH Bridge Clinic.

At Cook County Health, substance use treatment remains available for County residents regardless of their ability to pay.

The Bridge Clinic is an urgent care clinic that helps individuals struggling with opioid and/or alcohol use get rapid access to medication-assisted treatment (MAT).

If you live in Chicago, there are several other options available through the Chicago Department of Public Health.

Callers can access the MAR Now program for immediate same- or next-day appointment, regardless of insurance or ability to pay.

The Illinois Helpline is open 24 hours a day and offers free and confidential assistance. It helps people find substance use and problem gambling assessment and treatment through a statewide network of providers.

Chicagoans who cannot pay can still get outpatient mental health care free of charge at the public CDPH Mental Health Centers. The centers also offer medication management.

Getting Started: Assessment and Admission

Alcohol use disorder treatment is not a one-size-fits-all process. In fact, when considering your options for rehab, it is important that you take many factors into consideration including cost, program length, and how much of an impact your recovery will have on family and friends.

Treatment can be provided at different levels of intensity that vary according to the type, amount, and frequency of service provision. Each level is designed to provide treatment services in a setting that meets the needs and circumstances of the individual and their family.

The initial level of care recommended by a treatment professional may be different than expected. The following questions might help you understand:

You can ask these questions and others at any time during treatment. If you're not satisfied with the answers, keep asking. Your role in supporting your loved one includes monitoring the appropriateness of the level of care.

Recovery Support After Treatment

Recovery housing programs provide with alcohol-free and drug-free environments for their residents.

NA (Narcotics Anonymous) and AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) are both free mutual support groups. These peer-run meetings provide a safe space for people to talk about recovery and life without drugs or alcohol.

Oxford Houses provide peer support to sustain the recovery process of its members.

There are also community support programs that offer assistance for those who have completed treatment.

After formal treatment ends, recovery housing offers a transition that supports the next stage of sobriety and helps avoid relapse. It provides access to ongoing support services, such as individual or group counseling, case management, peer-based recovery coaching, employment training/job placement, family education/support, recovery activities/socialization, and/or other wellness resources.

Oxford Houses are self-run, peer-driven recovery communities that offer group housing and a sober living environment for people in early recovery from drug or alcohol problems. There's no time limit on residency. Residents must contribute to house expenses such as rent, utilities, and phone bills.
